The duty station for this position is Tumwater, WA.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, employees are working a combination of in-office and teleworking based on the position and business needs. Once the restrictions are lifted, this position may be available for continued partial telework opportunities, depending on business needs and supervisor approval.

 Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Plan, establish, and administer short-and long-range planning, implementation, and evaluation activities of statewide interpretive services programs, including oversight of agency-designated heritage sites and interpretive centers.  
• Exercise independent judgement and decision making related to program activities daily. Evaluate and convey highly variable and complex issues for consideration by agency staff, executive management, and the Commission.
• Supervise the statewide Exhibit Program.  Monitor and evaluate program work plan priorities and ensure the research, writing, design fabrication and installation of agency interpretive exhibits and digital media meet agency expectations. 
• Supervise the statewide and the Folk and Traditional Arts Program.  Monitor and evaluate program work plan priorities and related community partnership outreach activities. 
• Direct, and as appropriate supervise, staff engaged in the development and delivery of field-based interpretive programs, including youth-focused programs, environmental education, and other forms of partnership-based programming. 
• Provide oversight of staff engaged in the initiation and development of virtually based interpretive programs and educational activities.  
• Prepare and present reports and agenda items related to interpretive services within a wide range of decision-making environments.
• Identify interdependent partnership and grant opportunities to enhance the development and delivery of interpretive services.
• Collaborate and consult with interested indigenous tribes in development of interpretive content and programming, including guided and self-guided interpretation and other topics of mutual interest. Advise, facilitate, and act as liaison with external partners, committees, and councils.   
• Manage varied and complex development projects, including scoping, procurement, contract supervision and related project management functions. Serve as capital project representative for significant interpretive facility and heritage site development projects.  
• Facilitate agency interpretive training.  Organize and conduct professional training associated with program activities, including interpretive methods and best practices.
• Work to ensure that principles around diversity, equity, and inclusion are considered and integrated throughout the agency's statewide interpretive services and associated activities.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree with a majority of course studies in interpretation, communication, education, public history, geography, environmental sciences, or a closely related field. 
• Five (5) years of experience in interpretation, project management, or partnership development.
• Three (3) years of experience in budget management and supervision of full-time staff.  
• Valid unrestricted (except for corrective lenses) driver's license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's degree in interpretation, communication, education, public history, geography, environmental sciences or a closely related field.  
• Experience in developing and presenting trainings.
• Experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures.
• Experience working in a parks and recreation environment.
• Experience working with indigenous tribes and related community outreach activities.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This position works both indoors and outdoors, statewide.  Weekend and evening work hours will be required to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of the position's activities.  Statewide travel is essential, including routine overnight stays.
