Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach and Transportation Coordinator University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Location: Dartmouth, MA
SUPERVISES: Supervises assistant coaches and student employees associated with lacrosse
SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: Serves as the head coach of the Women’s lacrosse program. Performs all of the duties associated with being the Head Coach including managing games and practices, recruitment, fundraising, retention, budget management, supervision and mentoring of student-athletes, scheduling, etc. Serves as an athletic administrator on duty at home events in the fall and winter. Coordinates varsity team transportation and travel-related logistics.
Follows the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.
EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: •Responsible for practice and game preparation with an emphasis on strategy and skill development. Organizes, plans, schedules, and conducts safe training, practices and conditioning activities, in a professional manner. •Assesses skills and instructs student-athletes on technique and is responsible for all areas of team performance. •Maintains and enhances expertise and game strategies to be competitive within the conference and regionally. •Fosters an academic and athletic experience which aligns with the ideals of the NCAA Division III philosophy. •Embrace and models the philosophy which emphasizes a balance of academics and athletics. •Creates a diverse and inclusive team environment that leads to student-athletes meeting their full potential academically, athletically, and in the community. Included, are the lessons of character building and life skills (sportsmanship, leadership, civic engagement, career development, time management, etc.). •Provides mentorship to student-athletes around taking responsibility for their actions. Monitors behavior that could be detrimental to an individual and the team. •Devises an annual recruiting plan and implements recruiting strategies to yield student-athletes. Identifies, evaluates, and actively recruits academically and athletically qualified student-athletes. •Manages and maintains an updated recruiting database to enable the recruiting coordinator to provide monthly recruiting reports. •Devises annual plans to meet fundraising goals and engage alumni, and other key constituents. •Adheres to and assists with the development of the team budget. •Adheres to departmental procedures relative to purchasing and travel expenditures. Maintains and submits Pro card records to department representative. •Assists with the coordination of team travel and logistics, including vehicles, lodging, and meals. •Responsible for creating a competitive schedule within departmental parameters. •Coordinates the scheduling of facilities for practices. •Provides opportunities for student-athletes to receive and provide feedback. •Hires, oversees, evaluates, and develops assistant coaches and volunteers. •Works with the sports medicine and strength and conditioning staff to support the physical and mental well-being needs of the student-athletes. •Collaborates with athletic staff to monitor the academic progress of student-athletes to ensure that athletic eligibility and academic standards are maintained. •Provides the sports information staff with specific team information when requested. •Assists with the selection and ordering of new team equipment. Maintains commitment to department branding standards. •Responsible for managing the social media team accounts in accordance with university and department policies. •Maintains a thorough knowledge of NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations. •Adheres to Little East Conference policies (ex. sportsmanship, video exchange, meetings, etc.) •Reports any alleged violations of NCAA, conference, or institutional rules and regulations. Acknowledges self as a mandatory reporter (CSA). •Develops, plans, and promotes summer camps and/or clinics. •Ensures varsity team members are compliant with trainings, forms, and policy. •Serves as an athletic administrator on duty at home events in the fall and winter. •Coordinates varsity team transportation and travel-related logistics, including departure times, cancellations, and additions. Assist with other duties as assigned (ex. hotel arrangements, meals, fan buses, etc.). •Completes annual transportation bid considering team travel party sizes. Being mindful of budgetary constraints. •Communicates with bus company representative on team needs and trip details. Reports trip issues in a timely manner. •Relays relevant travel-related information to coaches. •Communicates changes to department personnel as needed. •Assists the department business manager with reconciliation of trip invoices. •Ensures the department is compliant with transportation release forms and risk waivers for student-athletes, and that coaches complete annual RMV checks. •Manages coach reservations of department recruiting vehicle. •Attends all staff and campus-wide meetings, as well as department events. •Performs other duties as requested by the Athletic Director (ex. search committees, campus committees, special projects, etc.)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree EXPERIENCE: •Demonstrated (over 3 seasons) head coaching experience at the collegiate level •Successful experience in recruiting student-athletes. •Former collegiate playing experience. •Previous experience in athletic administration functions at the collegiate level.
OTHER: •Ability to work flexible hours which includes evenings and weekends. Local and regional travel required. •Must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record and the ability to drive vans to and from contests. Driver’s license must remain valid throughout the duration of employment in the position. •Takes and successfully passes the NCAA Division III Rules Test, maintains certifications, and completes assigned trainings annually.
