GovHR USA is pleased to announce the recruitment and selection process for the Director of Economic Development for the City of Roanoke, Virginia. This announcement provides background information on the City of Roanoke, the municipal organization and the Economic Development Department, as well as the requirements and expected qualifications for the position.
The City of Roanoke (population 100,220) is the largest municipality in the western half of Virginia encompassing 43 square miles. The City provides its diverse population of residents within its 49 officially designated neighborhoods, 60 parks, and more than 90 miles of greenways and trails. Roanoke has 24 public schools, 16 private schools and twelve college and universities within 25 miles. Roanoke serves as the region’s education, medical, shopping, recreation, and cultural hub anchoring Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountain area.
The City of Roanoke, a full-service urban community, is seeking experienced professionals with proven economic development experience for the position of Director of Economic Development. The department is comprised of 9 employees and has an operating budget of $3M. This position will report to the City Manager.
A successful candidate for the position:
Must be an exceptional communicator, able to thoughtfully represent the interests of the Department and the City, with a high level of community presence.
Should possess a bachelor’ degree with major course work in the field of economic development, urban planning, architecture, public and/or business administration, or related field; a master’s degree is preferred. A CEcD designation is preferred.
Should have at least ten (10) years of related economic development experience in a similarly sized urban municipality.

The Director of Economic Development is appointed by and reports to the City Manager. The annual salary range for this desirable opportunity is $115,000 - $162,802 with hiring salary anticipated near midpoint and is dependent upon qualifications and experience. The City offers an excellent benefit package. Residency within the corporate limits of the City of Roanoke is required.
