Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a new interdisciplinary position in Business Analytics, Operations Management, and Statistics. This is a full-time, tenure-track position that will be shared between the Economics and Management Department and the Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics Department. This interdisciplinary position will promote research and teaching at the intersection of our disciplines. We seek to fill this position at the level of Assistant Professor (or Associate Professor with appropriate qualifications) beginning September 1, 2020.

Departmental Information: The Department of Economics and Management offers majors in Economics, Management, and Accounting and graduates an average of 120 students per year, including 50-60 majors in management. The mission of the Economics and Management Department is to equip students to identify, analyze, and solve complex problems through excellent, liberal arts-based instruction and experiential learning which enables students to become ethical and entrepreneurial leaders.
The Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics offers majors in Mathematics, Mathematics Teaching, Computer Science, and Statistics and graduates an average of 30 students per year. Among the 12 faculty, the department is home to three statisticians with varied research interests. In addition to the statistics major, the statistics minor is popular with students across campus, including those majoring in Economics, Finance, Management, Biology, Psychology and others. It is the philosophy of the Department that the skills of analytical thinking and logical argument, combined with the ability to communicate effectively, form the core of a solid liberal arts education in the mathematical sciences.
Major/Essential Functions: Gustavus faculty teach, advise, conduct research, and serve the college and departments. The annual teaching assignment will be six courses, normally three courses per semester. Primary responsibilities include teaching courses in business analytics, introductory statistics, operations management, and topics in statistics. There is also the expectation for research in the faculty member’s field of expertise and the advising of students majoring in statistics and management, as well as first-year students who have not yet decided on a major.

An earned doctorate in either Operations Management, Business Analytics, or Statistics/Data Science (or a related field); we will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and who will complete their degree by September 1, 2020;
Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching;
Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching and student advising;
Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential.
Experience teaching statistics and/or courses in operations management or business analytics;
Experience or interest in activities that bridge the two disciplines;
Experience or interest in using statistical software, such as R or Stata, in the classroom;
Significant coursework or experience in both business and statistics;
Experience or interest in mentoring and supporting women or members of underrepresented groups;
Experience or interest in conducting research with undergraduates and/or working in collaboration with other disciplines;
Continuing and active plan for research in the field of statistics and/or operations management;
Interest in, or knowledgeable of, teaching in a liberal arts environment.
