The Intercept is an award-winning news organization dedicated to holding the powerful accountable through fearless, adversarial journalism. Its in-depth investigations and unflinching analysis focus on politics, war, surveillance, corruption, the environment, technology, criminal justice, the media, and more. The Intercept gives its journalists the editorial freedom and legal support they need to expose corruption and injustice wherever they find it.
We’re looking for a Senior Politics Editor with experience directing coverage that has had a demonstrable impact. The editor will direct and edit 2-4 full time reporters, along with freelance reporters, and help shape political coverage.
Responsibilities + Qualifications:
Commitment to the journalistic mission of The Intercept
Background in editing and newsroom management
Track record of impact-oriented journalism on subjects such as national and/or international politics, public policy, criminal justice, business and corporate corruption
Ability to turn around an edit of a decently written and reported 1,000-word story in an hour or two
Ability to discern quickly when a story should just be killed or fundamentally redirected
Ability and willingness to mentor staff and freelancers
Must be well organized and able to simultaneously manage multiple reporters and stories in a quickly moving news environment
Comfort editing opinion journalism and quick hits as well as investigative reporting and long-form narrative journalism
The editor should die a little inside when another outlet publishes a great story, yet should have the wisdom to know that you can’t win ‘em all.
The editor should want their journalism to have an impact, but not shave it one way or the other to achieve it.
The editor should not automatically assume that if everybody thinks a story was terrible, then it was certainly a success. Sometimes everybody is right.
The editor must be willing and able to stand up to powerful people gifted with an impressive ability to lie convincingly.
The editor must recognize that journalists are not passive observers of politics, but rather are necessarily political actors by the very practice of journalism.
7+ years of relevant journalistic experience
