Work where you matter. Vancouver Island University is searching for their next Director of Ancillary Services. This is a key function that will give you the opportunity to play an important role in VIU’s future. As our Director of Ancillary Services, you will be responsible for providing organization-wide leadership for ancillary services and advancing the University’s mission by guiding and directing a range of services that have a profound impact on potential and current students, staff, faculty, guests and the broader community.
Reporting to the Associate Vice-President, Facilities and Ancillary Services, you will provide strategic planning and leadership to a portfolio of business, retail and other ancillary services and initiatives across all VIU campuses, including: VIU Student Residence, Campus Stores, the Print Shop, Food Services, Starbucks and contracted food vendors, Meeting and Event Services to ensure the mandate is met and generates profitable cash flow annually.
Duties are varied and broad and include the following:
oversee and be accountable for the budgets of Ancillary services units and ensure performance targets set for those units are achieved;
Performance and profit development:
integrate and expand business service operations and profit, and measure and ensure contract performance and customer satisfaction.
Negotiation and contract initiation:
negotiate with external stakeholders: initiating, engaging and managing a variety of short- and long-term contractual relationships, including the preparation of specifications, terms of reference and hiring of consultants for related work such as formal reviews and studies.
Strategy development and implementation:
develop and implement strategies for effective and ongoing change management to ensure programs and services remain current, innovative, effective and fiscally responsible
provide the strategies, management and vision to ensure ancillary services deliver effective services with the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems to grow and ensure financial strength and operational efficiency
Employee management and development:
oversee the hiring, guidance, mentoring, and development of staff, and foster an environment of continual learning, continuous improvement, and career development
Bachelors in a related field (commerce, business, hospitality, hotel management, etc.) from an appropriately accredited institution.
15 years’ relevant experience in a management level capacity in retail, hospitality/conference services or other service orientated industries. Business development experience would be an asset. (An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.)
Experience managing diverse business operations for revenue generation and operational efficiency.
A track record of strong leadership and vision through superior management and teambuilding, embracing all facets of resource management, and a commitment to student success.
Ability to manage complex budgets and optimize cost-effectiveness in resource allocation and expenditures. Experience supervising in a unionized environment.
